April is National Fair Housing Month

April 13, 2005 - West Babylon, NY - In honor of National Fair Housing Month - the Long Island Board of REALTORS®, Inc. (LIBOR) recently presented the fair housing forum entitled, "Fair Housing Laws...The High Cost of Ignorance." Attended by hundred’s of Long Island Realtors®, the program featured Long Island Housing Service’s Executive Director Michelle Santantonio and noted civil rights litigator Wendy Pelle-Beer.

The program was designed to help REALTORS® gain a better understanding of existing fair housing laws.

This April marks the 37th anniversary of the passage of the U.S. Fair Housing Law, Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, as amended, which enunciated a national policy of Fair Housing without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, sex, familial status, and handicap, and encourages fair housing opportunities for all citizens. LIBOR President, Marian Fraker-Gutin says, “The Long Island Board of REALTORS® is committed to awareness of the Fair Housing Law, Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, and continues to address discrimination in our community, to support programs that will educate Realtors® and the public about the right to equal housing opportunities.

Furthermore, the Long Island Board of Realtors® is dedicated to fostering partnership efforts with other organizations to help assure every American of their right to fair housing.
