Long Island Board of Realtors® and Islanders to Sponsor “Hockey with a Heart” to Benefit Island Harvest

November 2008 - West Babylon, NY - The Long Island Board of Realtors (LIBOR) and New York Islanders have teamed up to present an exciting night of hockey and a chance to get food to the growing number of Long Islanders at risk of hunger.  LIBOR will sponsor “Hockey with a Heart” to benefit Island Harvest on Saturday, November 29, 2008 as the Islanders take on the Ottawa Senators  at 7:00pm at Nassau Coliseum.  Along with special ticket prices and sponsorship opportunities, the Islanders will donate 5% of total ticket sales to Island Harvest.

Fighting hunger and touching lives, Island Harvest - Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization - serves as the bridge between those who have surplus food and those who need it.  Their volunteers and staff “rescue,”or collect surplus food from over 600 local restaurants, caterers, farms, and other food-related businesses; and distribute it to a network of close to 500 soup kitchens, food pantries, and other places where those in need can access it.  Island Harvest also conducts educational programs to increase hunger awareness and inform the public how they can get involved in their mission to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island.

“Hunger is a very serious problem and one that has been increasing recently as a result of the poor economy,” said Mohsen Zandieh, LIBOR President.  “The work of Island Harvest towards collecting and distributing food that might otherwise go to waste is critical in addressing the needs of more than 260,000 Long Islanders who are directly impacted by hunger”, added Joe Sinnona, LIBOR PR Committee Co-Chair.

Realtors Against Hunger is part of the LIBOR’s “We’re More Than Realtors” initiative, created by LIBOR’s PR Committee, that supports numerous programs and charitable community organizations.

“LIBOR’s ‘Realtors Against Hunger’ Campaign has been a great partner in fighting hunger on Long Island,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, President and CEO, Island Harvest. “Realtors across Long Island have sponsored special events, food drives and made numerous contributions to assist hunger relief organizations in their efforts to address hunger in our communities.  Island Harvest is truly grateful for their support along with that of the Islanders,” Dresner added.
